How has feminist scholarship changed historical writing? The fields of women's and gender history have expanded dramatically since the second half of the twentieth century, showing great vigour and variety in the breadth of subjects tackled and the range of methodologies explored. Moreover, feminist historians have played a central role in the often searing theory wars that have divided the discipline for the past thirty years. Hence, not only has gender become a widespread tool of historical analysis, but feminist critics and historians have also played a vital part in the recentevolution of the historical discipline itself. It is clear that scholars no longer imagine that it is possible to write history, whether of the political, military, social, economic or intellectual variety, without taking gender into account. This new edition has been updated to include recentscholarship by figures such as Judith Butler and Irene Thery. The author has added material on psychoanalytic ways of thinking about gender (in particular Lacanian and Kleinian concepts) as constituting a third way of thinking about identity. She also reexamines the possible future of gender historyand the link between scholarship and politics in the twenty-first century. Writing Gender History provides a critical overview of the evolution and influence of gender in historical writing, essential for students and scholars alike. | Writing Gender History by Laura Lee Downs, Paperback | Indigo Chapters
