Within all of these novels, Lawrence contrasts living with existing, within an industrial setting. In particular, he explores the nature of relationships. What is love? Is it physical? Is it emotional? Can you have one without the other? Finally, Lawrence explores the class system and the strange behaviours generated within it. He is a philosopher at heart.
