Originally published in 1928, this anthology was created to provide readers aged fourteen upwards with a representation of English poetry from Spenser onwards. Selections were made with a view towards stimulating the interest of the young reader and encouraging an emotional and intellectual involvement in poetry. The material is ordered chronologically with the exception of two sections at the end of the text, which are devoted to sonnets and poems about death.
